Some of the Fields Which the Department of Thoracic Surgery Deals With
Lung Needle Biopsy
Lung cancer is a disease caused by the uncontrolled proliferation of cells in the lung tissues. According to the World Health Organization (WHO)’s statistics, lung cancer is the most common fatal cancer in men and the second most common fatal cancer in women. When a tumor is detected in the lung using computed tomography or other imaging methods, a biopsy is required to investigate whether the tumor is benign or malignant. A biopsy is the removal of cells or tissue to analyze a disease. In the lung needle biopsy, a small piece of the lung is taken and examined. The piece taken is examined in the pathology unit to determine the stage of the disease and the type of the tumor. Lung needle biopsy is usually performed under local anesthesia and is a painless procedure. Patients can rest under hospital conditions for 3-4 hours after the procedure and resume their routine life.
Treatment of Excessive Sweating
Sweating is a natural defense mechanism that helps the body maintain heat balance and remove toxins. It’s normal to produce increased amount of sweat for reasons such as exercise, excitement, stress. Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis ) is producing excessive amounts of sweat regardless of the activity and environmental conditions. Excessive sweating is especially seen in the hands, armpits and feet. Surgical operation performed in thoracic surgery unit is the only definitive solution for excessive sweating. The operation, which is performed by clipping the part taking sweating transmission to the said region of the sympathetic nerve chain that causes excessive sweating, takes about 30-60 minutes. During the operation performed under general anesthesia, one or two 0.5-1 cm incisions are made in the armpit. After a one-day hospital stay following surgery, you can be discharged and resume your routine life in a week.
Bronchoscopy is an endoscopic diagnostic method used to diagnose respiratory tract and lung diseases and identify respiratory problems. It’s performed due to respiratory and pulmonary diseases which cannot be definitely diagnosed with other methods, and complaints such as persistent cough, bloody sputum, hoarseness. It can be performed under general or local anesthesia depending on patient status and the procedure to be performed. It’s a painless procedure.
Thoracentesis is the name given to the process of obtaining samples from the fluid between the lung membranes using a special needle. Normally there is very little fluid between the membranes covering the lungs. The accumulation of fluid between the lung membranes is called ‘pleural effusion. Thoracentesis aims to drain fluid and facilitate breathing. It is a very short and painless procedure. It is usually applied with sedation.
