Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Magnetic resonance imaging (MR) is one of the most commonly used and functional methods among imaging technologies. MR is a diagnostic technique that does not use medication, is painless and does not expose the patient to harmful effects of x-rays. It is carried out in specially insulated rooms where the patient lies in a cylinder containing strong electromagnetism. At the end of the MR examination, a very high quality image is obtained. The patient should keep calm and still during MRI. Magnetic resonance imaging takes about 10 to 45 minutes. The duration varies according to the area to be examined and the information to be collected about the disease. Before entering the MRI room, the patient must remove all metal items to avoid any effect on the magnetic field and carefully examine the information form handed to him/her before the procedure. Magnetic resonance imaging method is frequently used especially in the diagnosis of brain and spinal cord diseases. MR is a very successful method in the examination of limbs and joints such as hands, arms, shoulders, elbows, hip. Brain tumor imaging, brain, eye, ear imaging and people diagnosed with cancer can benefit from the MRI method for determining the stage of disease. The imaging can be performed in all patients aged 7 and older, who can lie still inside the MR device.
Tomography is an X-ray-like imaging method; it’s a radiological imaging technique performed using x-rays that helps to create cross-sectional view of the examined part of the body. But it offers a more detailed imaging than x-ray. Tomography is made up of the word Tomos, which means part, and the word Graphein, which means to record in Greek. The device used for tomography has a stretcher-shaped part for the patient to lie down on it that looks like a tunnel and moves up and down in the middle. The stretcher-shaped device moves into the tunnel and stops there. It is possible to hear some clicking sounds caused by the operation of the device from the moment the procedure starts. Before entering the room where tomography will be performed, all metal objects must be removed to avoid any effect on the magnetic field and the information form handed before the procedure should be carefully examined. If you suspect pregnancy, you must inform your doctor. A tomography scan usually takes about a few minutes to 30 minutes. Tomography is used in the diagnosis of many different diseases ranging from cancer to traumas, from infection to lesion formation. Tomography may also be requested for muscle and tissue injuries, bone injuries, inflammations and other degenerations, detection of benign or malignant tumors in any part of the body and cardiac diseases.
Ultrasonography is an imaging method performed in various parts of the body using high frequency sound waves. Ultrasonography method is used in the case of internal bleeding, tissue damage, cyst, tumor, stone, sand, myoma and many other internal diseases. Ultrasonography method is very important especially in pregnancy follow-up and its use is harmless.
Mammography is a treatment method used in the diagnosis of breast diseases. During mammography, your breasts are placed on the imaging unit of the mammography device. The breasts placed in this section are flattened and a more detailed image is obtained. Your breasts, sandwiched between two layers, are shot in two different positions. Mammography is completed in about 15-20 minutes. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. It takes about 8-10 years for a breast cancer to be detected manually. With mammography, breast cancer can be detected approximately 3-4 years before it is detected manually.
