Gastroenterology discipline deals with the diagnosis and treatment of digestive system diseases. It’s a subspecialty of Internal Medicine that deals with the digestive system diseases. Gastroenterology deals with diagnosis and treatment of diseases of all abdominal organs, except for kidneys, including diseases of esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (colon) and anal region, which make up the structure called the gastrointestinal tract, liver diseases, gallbladder and biliary tract diseases, pancreatic diseases and abdominal wall diseases. The fields of interest of the gastroenterology discipline are very wide and are examined under two main headings. The first title is diseases of the esophagus, small intestines, large intestines and anus, which are called the gastrointestinal tract. For diagnostic purposes, esophagogastroduodenoscopy for the upper gastrointestinal system, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography for biliary tract and pancreas examinations, colonoscopy and rectosigmoidoscopy for large intestine examination are performed. Endoscopy is a procedure that is performed orally without surgery to examine the digestive system. Endoscopy is performed with the help of a flexible tube with a camera and light at its end. With the system used, the images of the digestive system can be examined on a monitor. Endoscopy can be applied for reasons such as persistent nausea and abdominal pain, sudden weight loss, ulcer, difficulty in gulping and swallowing, infections, tumors and gallstones.
Esophagogastroduodenoscopy is an endoscopic examination of stomach, the duodenum, the upper portion of the small intestine. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy can be performed to investigate diseases such as burning in the chest, nausea and vomiting, blood in mouth, poor appetite and sudden weight loss, chronic diarrhea, low blood levels and stomach ulcer.
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography
Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a common endoscopic procedure in which the endoscope is advanced to further parts of small intestine and passed to the bile duct and pancreatic ducts to examine the said organs. This procedure is applied in cases of bile duct stones, jaundice without reason, and suspected disease in the biliary tract, liver, and pancreas.
Colonoscopy is an imaging method that allows the examination of the large intestine and the last part of the small intestine. Colonoscopy is performed for diagnosis and treatment of unexplained abdominal pain, sudden weight loss, prolonged diarrhea and constipation, anemia, blood in stool and intestinal polyps.
Rectosigmoidoscopy is the name given to the process of examining the last 30-40 cm part of the large intestine called the rectum and sigmoid colon. It is applied when the risk of colon cancer is detected, in case of unexplainable rectal bleeding and pain, or to diagnose prolonged diarrhea.
Liver Needle Biopsy
Liver biopsy is usually applied to determine the type of a mass detected in the liver by imaging methods such as ultrasound, tomography or MRI.
