Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases. It’s also known as the science of heart. Cardiology is concerned with diseases of the heart, arteries and veins. Formerly, it was a sub-branch of internal medicine but today it’s an individual branch of medicine. Its sub-branches include nuclear cardiology, interventional cardiology, echocardiography, and cardiac electrophysiology. Common symptoms of cardiological diseases include sudden and involuntary weight loss, palpitations, respiratory distress, frequent trips to the toilet to pass urine at night.
Cardiology examines all diseases of the heart and the circulatory system. Cardiology unit is concerned with heart attack, heart failure, hypertension, aortic stenosis, aneurysms, heart failure, hypertension and primary tumors of the heart.

Diagnostic Methods Used in Cardiology
Exercise Stress Test
During the exercise stress test, the patient walks on a treadmill the speed and incline of which are adjusted by the doctor. Patient is made to walk on the treadmill the speed and incline of which are increased every 3 minutes. During the test, ECG monitoring and blood pressure measurement are performed at certain intervals.
It is the procedue of examining the internal structure and function of the heart with the help of sound waves (ultrasonography). Echocardiography allows the doctor to see the beating of the heart and the blood pumping process. Echocardiography may be requested due to problems with the heart chambers, heart problems, shortness of breath, and chest pain.
Holter is a small wearable device consisting of a few cables and a recording device, which can monitor the patient’s heart rhythm. It allows the patient’s heart movements to be followed for 1-2 days. Holter test can be applied for diagnostic purposes to people who are thought to have heart diseases such as blood pressure problems, pulse or heart rhythm disorders.
Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring
Ambulatory blood pressure assessment is a measurement made by a portable electronic device that can measure blood pressure at adjustable intervals while patients continue their normal daily activities.
CT Coronary Angiography
The examination of the heart vessels with computed tomography devices is called CT Coronary Angiography. CT Coronary Angiography can be used to examine the heart vessels, check the vessels which have been opened with a balloon or by stenting, and evaluate the coronary arteries in high risk patients.
Lung x-ray is an imaging method used to examine the inside of thoracic cavity in the case of chest pain and shortness of breath.
In cardiac catheterization examination, the heart is biopsied and the pressures of the heart chambers can be measured. It is a commonly used diagnostic method in the diagnosis of coronary artery and heart valve diseases.
Myocardial Perfusion Scintigraphy
Myocardial Perfusion Scintigraphy is an imaging method used to identify coronary artery disease by evaluating the amount of blood reaching the cardiac muscle using gamma rays.
